I bow to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-faced deity who receives offerings of fruits, appam, aval and puffed rice. He dwells in the intellect of devoted seekers and, like the wish-fulfilling Kalpaka tree, removes their karmic obstacles and grants wisdom and grace. He is the son of Lord Shiva, who wears the crescent moon and sacred flowers, and of the supreme Mother, Uma. With his mighty form and great rounded belly, Ganesha is worshipped here with fragrant flowers and loving devotion. The hymn recalls Ganesha as the divine scribe associated with the writing of the Mahabharata. It also refers to the traditional story in which he broke the axle of Shiva's chariot, demonstrating that even divine undertakings begin properly only after honouring Ganesha. Finally, Arunagirinathar recalls Ganesha's role in Murugan's union with Valli. Ganesha appeared as an elephant in the millet field, frightening Valli so that she sought Murugan's protection. Thus, through his intervention, the marriage of Valli and Murugan was brought about.
